  A one-of-a-kind, poured concrete, mid-century modern home built on the banks of the Mississippi River in the 1930s by St. Cloud residents, Colie and Naomi Guy, is the site of a hands-on workshop covering mid-century modern architecture and concrete. Artists and horticulturalists, the Guys designed their home to be the “House-of-Tomorrow.” The workshop will cover the benefits and challenges of mid-century modern homes and offer a crash course in concrete. Learn about concrete’s structure and history, get hands-on experience with proper mixing and how to pour concrete slabs, and try some basic maintenance and repair techniques. Come ready to work, learn and enjoy!

  The workshop will be held on Saturday, May 23^rd, from 9 am to noon. Taught by renovation specialist, Eric Cheever, it will include a tour of the home and grounds and a hands-on guided course in concrete. Own a mid-century modern home? Dealing with the joys and struggles of a flat roof? Got concrete that needs maintenance and repair? Then this class is for you!

  Join us for a community discussion on the history of racially restrictive covenants and housing segregation in Minnesota. Together, we will watch a locally produced docuseries on racial covenants in Central Minnesota and participate in a hands-on transcription session of Stearns County deeds, led by members of Mapping Prejudice at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Please bring a laptop or other device along to this event. Co-sponsored by the Great River Covenants Project, Mapping Prejudice, and St. Cloud State University.

• Drywall vs. Lath and Plaster Hands-on Workshop

  Get your fill of historic building preservation knowledge and fun at the upcoming hands-on workshop, Drywall vs. Lath and Plaster. Learn about the benefits and drawbacks of both from Mark Johnston, owner of Historic Design Consulting and an expert in the building preservation trades. Mark will demonstrate original eighteenth- and nineteenth-century techniques for plaster repair and show how home and building owners can use modern products to achieve similar results. Workshop attendees will get exclusive training from Mark as he shares his knowledge and expertise.

  The workshop will be held on Saturday, June 27th, from 9 a.m. to noon, at a beautiful Prairie-style home built ca. 1915 on the banks of the Mississippi River near downtown St. Cloud. Whether you are a home or building owner needing help with repairs, a preservation enthusiast eager to learn or just want to know how things are built, this workshop is for you!
